Investment Blogging Niches to Consider

Starting an investment blog can be a fun way to share what you’ve learned — and maybe even build passive income, if you do it right.

The biggest challenge for many bloggers is getting started. What host should you use, how will you monetize it, what will your blog be called?

And, maybe even most importantly: what topics will you cover? It’s not enough to say “Oh, I want to start an investment blog.”

You need to choose a topic you will specialize in.

Why Your Investment Blog Needs to Specialize

Investment or trading are too broad to create a single website on. Or at least that’s true if you don’t have the resources of investopedia.com, which has almost 60,000 pages!

Creating a niched blog allows you to dive deeper into topics and challenges investors face in that area. For example, someone planning their retirement isn’t looking for the same type of information as someone who is looking for investors for their first business. Or a beginner trader who wants to get started trading CFDs (contracts-for-difference) needs specific information on how to get started.

A new site owner can start by reviewing areas within investing where you can consider specializing. Then you can niche down from there.

Investment Blogging Niche List

Before choosing a niche, consider why you want to enter that niche and make sure you have a broad knowledge of the industry.

For example, if you make $100K a year at your day job, you might have trouble creating a blog telling broke college kids how to invest. (Unless, of course, you used to be a broke college kid and that is when you got into investing!)

Here is a list of possible niches. This list isn’t exhaustive. But don’t limit yourself to just these.  They are just a sampling of niches and they should get you going. And remember, you can niche down more once you pick an area to specialize in.

  • Algorithmic trading
  • Analysis
  • Arbitrage
  • Automated trading
  • Beginner
  • Bonds and dividend-producing investments
  • Business
  • Commodities
  • Country/region-specific
  • Cryptocurrencies
  • Day-trading
  • “Do-gooder” (fair trade, environmental, etc)
  • FIRE (financial independence, retire early)
  • Futures
  • High earners
  • Industry-specific (energy, communications, etc.)
  • Investing for college students
  • Location-based investment advice (by country or region)
  • Macroeconomics-based
  • Mutual funds (indexed funds)
  • Personal finance
  • Real estate
  • Research
  • Retirement
  • Start-up
  • Stocks
  • Taxes
  • Wealth management.

Don’t feel like you have to stick to just one topic! Combining more than one topic may be the right move if there is a large enough market.

For example, you could start a blog about how to get into cryptocurrency as a college student. Or teach high earners, like doctors, how to get into commodities.

But make sure you don’t niche down too far; you might find there is no audience if your content is too specific, even though you might be the world’s leading expert on retirement investing for environmentally-conscious circus performers in Ghana.

Summary

If you’ve considered starting a blog about investments, choose your niche wisely. There are thousands of people who want to learn about everything from how to invest in commodities to how to get the most out of their 401K.

Once you’ve built an audience, there’s no telling where you can take it.
